Art Smalley

Board of Advisors

Art Smalley is the co-author with Professor Durward K. Sobek of the book "Understanding A3 Thinking: A Critical Component of Toyota's PDCA Management System," which reflects the depth of Art's hands-on experience in this arena over the past twenty-five years. Art was fortunate to have been one of the few Americans to work for Toyota in Japan for an extended period of time, where he experienced all facets of production life in Toyota, from working on assembly lines to maintaining precision equipment to project management. Combined with his proficiency in reading and writing the Japanese language he has keen insights on TPS that few in America possess. Subsequent to Toyota, Art worked in the organization directed by John Beakes, Jr., where he assisted Chrysler Corporation with the development and implementation of the Chrysler Production System. He was then the director of Lean for Donnelly Corporation, where the successful Lean transformation was led by Russ Scaffede, a former Toyota Vice President and currently the Chairman of the OPS Board of Advisors. Additionally Art spent several years as a lean expert for the international management consulting firm of McKinsey & Company. Art sums up his many years of Lean implementation experience with the statement that "There is a decided over-emphasis in the west on simply using the tools of TPS. More attention needs to be applied on solving systemic problems that will generate business results." Art provides services to clients in industry and government through his organization Art of Lean, and he serves as a member of Board of Advisors of OPS.
