CEO John Beakes, Jr and OPS Senior Healthcare Advisor Rachel Mandel, MD were contributors to an article published in the November 2019 issue of Outpatient Surgery. The cover story titled "Unsung Heroes" focuses on the struggles and challenges of workers in sterile processing departments of healthcare facilities across the country. The article highlights that in spite of the fact that sterile processing is a critical department in the operating room, the staff are not paid enough. Mr. Beakes stated that "they work in the fast-paced, pressure-filled environment surrounded by bacteria-slicked instruments and they barely make a living wage. It's time to appreciate and value the work they do." Dr. Mandel commented on the importance of respecting the people who do the work. She said "It's their expertise that's crucial to driving the changes that will result in real improvement, and they're the ones who will sustain it."
Outpatient Surgery Magazine is a division of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) which was founded in 1949 to establish a national community for operating room nurses who are interested in sharing best practices. The magazine, with a national circulation of over 25,000, serves as a meeting place and marketplace for decision makers in outpatient surgery venues.
